The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Thomas J. Rennie (MCSN: 0-17350), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader of Company B, First Battalion, Twentieth Marines (Engineer), FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 16 June 1944. Courageously crawling over hazardous terrain in the face of intense hostile fire, First Lieutenant Rennie went to the aid of a wounded man and, after administering morphine, further exposed himself to the enemy fire to arrange for evacuating the casualty. Later, during a furious hostile night counterattack on Tinian, he maneuvered his engineer platoon into position to furnish infantry support to a rifle company whose defenses were being overrun by an enemy charge. He personally led his men through many hours of close-in fighting until the Japanese were repulsed and he had to be evacuated because of his wounds. By his courage, determination and devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Rennie upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
