The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain Charles F. Reinhold (MCSN: 0-9384), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 15 June 1944. When a pounding barrage of enemy artillery and mortar fire forced his company to debark at the water’s edge, Captain Reinhold promptly organized his men and launched a vigorous assault against the hostile machine-gun emplacements as he boldly advanced toward Agingan Point. Subjected to a viscous enemy counterattack upon reaching the middle of the beach, he deployed his unit with outstanding tactical ability and destroyed the entire Japanese force then, skillfully reorganized his company, continued the bitter assault against hostile gun positions and snipers, courageously moving from one platoon to another until he was mortally wounded by Japanese fire. Captain Reinhold’s inspiring leadership and great personal valor in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
