The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Verol L. Reger (MCSN: 0-17741), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Battalion Bomb Disposal Officer attached to the Second Battalion, Nineteenth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 21 July 1944. Untiring and exceptionally skilled in the performance of hazardous duty, First Lieutenant Reger directed the clearing of all types of mines and unexploded projectiles from the reef, the beach and the road in the Green Beach sector and thus made possible the rapid and safe unloading of supplies and equipment essential to our front line and rear area troops. Instantly killed when an anti-personnel mine exploded on 21 July, First Lieutenant Reger, by his valiant conduct had fulfilled a vital mission and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
