The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Foy M. Reese (MCSN: 326283), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Eleventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during combat against enemy Japanese surface forces in the Solomon Islands Area on the night of 13 October 1942. When incendiary shells from enemy ships exploded near the quartermaster storeroom tent in the bivouac area of his battalion, starting fires, Private First Class Reese, during a short lull in the shelling and later during the second phase of the action, worked tirelessly at the battery well pump until the fire was extinguished. His bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest tradition of the United States Naval Service.
