The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Frank L. Reed, Jr. (MCSN: 414012), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Fourth Tank Battalion, Company B, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, 15 June 1944. Starting ashore on D-Day in an LCM loaded with a tank, Corporal Reed voluntarily risked his life by offering his assistance in correcting a dangerous list observed in the lighter, and boldly exposed himself to intense enemy artillery and mortar fire, took a position where his weight might aid in keeping the LCM from capsizing before it reached shore with the tank. His conduct and great valor reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Reed and the United States Naval Service.
