The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Fred M. Redman (MCSN: 986669), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Acting Squad Leader of Company K, Third Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese force on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 2 March 1945. Early in an attack against a fortified position, Private Redman assumed command of his squad when his sergeant was wounded. In the face of very heavy enemy machine-gun fire, he skillfully led an assault against a stone pillbox which was holding up the advance of his company and succeeded in destroying the hostile emplacement. When the captured position came under an immediate intense mortar barrage causing several casualties, Private Redman moved from one to the other to render aid, constantly exposing himself until he himself was seriously wounded. His exemplary leadership, cool courage and unselfish devotion to duty were in the keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
