The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Stanley Rebut (MCSN: 408875), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Squad Leader, serving with Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, during action on enemy Japanese-held Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Group, 17 May 1945. Assigned the mission of assaulting a hill fiercely defended by well-entrenched enemy forces, Sergeant Rebut led his men toward the objective with courage and skill until the squad was pinned down by heavy Japanese automatic fire. Alone and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, he advanced through the devastating hostile fire, attached the machine-gun position with his carbine and grenades and succeeded in destroying it, thereby permitting his unit to capture its objective. His aggressiveness, indomitable fighting spirit and devotion to duty served as a constant inspiration to his comrades and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
