The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class John B. Ray, Jr. (MCSN: 275052), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Member of an Amphibian Truck Company serving with the Second Motor Transportation Battalion, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan Island, Mariana Islands, 21 June 1944. Courageous and aggressive in the face of terrific fire from Japanese guns, Private First Class Ray rendered valiant service during the initial operations on this strategically important island. Taken under fire by enemy snipers while unloading ammunition for an artillery position, Private First Class Ray unhesitatingly volunteered to join a patrol assigned to wipe out the enemy pocket and worked his way to the front of the attack where he was fatally wounded during the ensuing fight. His unwavering devotion to duty and heroic fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
