The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Luther J. Raschke (MCSN: 310972), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, January 3, 1944. Although several unsuccessful attempts had been made to rescue his platoon leader who was severely wounded during a fierce attack across a jungle stream, Private First Class Raschke voluntarily made his way into the hazardous waters under withering enemy fire and, through his heroic endurance and complete disregard for his own personal safety, succeeded in carrying his stricken officer to cover. Private First Class Raschke’s courageous initiative and selfless efforts on behalf of another were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
