The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal James A. Rascento (MCSN: 452850), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Squad Leader of Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 22 February 1945. Leading his squad during a withdrawal to consolidate positions for the night, Corporal Rascento crawled through intense enemy fire on two occasions and dragged wounded comrades to a place of safety.
