The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Robert E. Ramp (MCSN: 498500), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Squad Leader, serving with the First Reconnaissance Company, Headquarters Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 2 June 1945. Assigned the point in a reconnaissance patrol to the front of the division lines, Corporal Ramp came in contact with a well-entrenched enemy force and valiantly directed his men against the fierce machine-gun and rifle fire from the Japanese emplacements to destroy two hostile positions with grenade and small-arms fire. Dauntlessly pressing home the attack against the remaining positions, he exposed himself continuously to maneuver his men into covered positions for a renewed assault carrying on with courage and aggressiveness until fatally wounded by enemy fire. Corporal Ramp’s heroic actions and devotion to the fulfillment of his assignment reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
