The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Joe S. Ramos (MCSN: 403062), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with the FOURTH Marine Division during an engagement with enemy Japanese forces on Roi Island, Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands, February 1, 1944. When his tank was directed to cover the advance of two other tanks against an enemy blockhouse, Corporal Ramos courageously exposed himself to hostile fire by looking out of the turret of his vehicle in order to observe the tanks ahead more clearly. Fully realizing the extreme danger of his perilous action, he dartingly remained in this position and covered the tanks ahead until mortally wounded. By his heroic action, Corporal Ramos enabled his comrades to complete their mission unhindered, and his valiant spirit of self-sacrifice was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
