The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant John S. Radway (MCSN: 0-20163), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader of company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-Third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 16 June 1944. With one of his men severely wounded and lying in an open fire-swept area, Second Lieutenant Radway immediately directed his Platoon Sergeant to take charge of the unit and pressed forward alone to attempt a rescue. Boldly exposing himself to shattering machine-gun and mortar fire, he placed the helpless Marine on his shoulder and carried him to a defiladed position to administer first aid. By his daring initiative, great personal valor and grave concern for the safety of another at great personal risk, Second Lieutenant Radway contributed to the saving of a man who otherwise might have perished and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
