The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class James H. Quinn (MCSN: 354760), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the FIRST Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, 26 December, 1943. When the advance of his company was retarded by withering fire from a heavily defended enemy pillbox, Private First Class Quinn unhesitatingly volunteered to man a bazooka and attempt to destroy the hostile stronghold. Courageously crawling to within a few yards of his target, he succeeded in making three direct hits before he was mortally wounded by enemy machine-gun fire. Private First Class Quinn’s daring initiative and inspiring devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
