The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Clyde L. Purser, Jr. (MCSN: 499580), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a photographer serving with Headquarters Company, Headquarters Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands on 24 June 1944. When a machine gunner was wounded by a burst of hostile fire, Private First Class Purser crawled from his covered position to go to the aid of the stricken man and unable to drag him back unhesitatingly exposed himself to enemy fire to carry the man to safety. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Purser and the United States Naval Service.
