The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant James M. Price, Jr. (MCSN: 534533), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a platoon leader of Company C, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 13 May 1945. In the face of intense hostile fire concentrated on his platoon, Sergeant Price courageously led his men in an assault against a well-entrenched hostile force situated on an escarpment and armed with automatic weapons and grenade dischargers. Although wounded as he and his group reached the top of the hill, he remained to direct his men in repulsing an enemy counter attack and in clearing snipers from the ridge, consenting to evacuation only after the hill had been secured. By his valiant actions he aided materially in capturing a vital terrain feature and in annihilating a platoon of the Japanese. His aggressive spirit, initiative and determination reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Price and the United States Naval Service.
