The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Howard Price (MCSN: 448366), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Cape Torokina area, Bougainville, Solomon Islands on December 13, 1943. With the advance of his platoon held in check by intense enemy fire Private First Class Price volunteered to go forward alone as a scout into territory held by strong Japanese forces. Courageously and skillfully working his way through dense jungle and over difficult terrain he succeeded in reaching a point within fifteen feet of the enemy positions before he was mortally wounded. By his heroic initiative he enabled his platoon leader to locate the enemy machine gun emplacements, change his plans of maneuver and save the lives of many of his men. Private First Class Price’s unswerving devotion to duty in the face of grave peril was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
