The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Carl A. Poteet (MCSN: 360970), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with a rifle company of the Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces at Fonte Hill, Guam, Mariana Islands on 29 July 1944. Courageously working his way along a cliff in heavy brush as a member of a patrol in search of enemy snipers, Private First Class Poteet heard a wounded Marine calling for assistance and completely disregarding his own personal safety unhesitatingly dashed across an open area exposed to hostile rifle fire in an attempt to aid his comrade, but was himself mortally wounded before reaching the helpless man. Private First Class Poteet’s valiant conduct and self-sacrificing efforts on behalf of another were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
