The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Robert M. Port (MCSN: 0-8480), United States Marine Corps, for heroic gallantry and intrepidity as machine gun officer of Company H, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division during an attack by enemy Japanese forces in the Tenaru Sector, Guadalcanal on the early morning of August 21, 1942. Despite the furious and accurate fire of a strong enemy landing force, Second Lieutenant Port, seeing one of his men lying wounded in a gun emplacement directly in the line of fire, left his shelter and fearlessly removed the wounded man to safety. Second Lieutenant Port’s great personal valor and fin courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
