The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Charles H. Poorman, Jr. (MCSN: 445737), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Platoon Sergeant of Company A, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 3 June 1951. When his unit was subjected to intense automatic weapons and small arms fire from enemy forces occupying a series of bunkers during a platoon attack against a heavily fortified hostile strong point, Staff Sergeant Poorman immediately led his men in a daring assault on the enemy positions. Although constantly exposed to accurate hostile fire, he continued to throw hand grenades into the bunkers and personally killed at lead three of the enemy before the remainder of the hostile troops retreated in confusion, enabling the platoon to occupy the strategically important ground. By his courageous leadership, marked initiative and unswerving devotion to duty, Staff Sergeant Poorman served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
