The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Vito A. A. Polletta (MCSN: 1074120), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Ammunition Carrier of Company A, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Provisional Marine Brigade (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 15 September 1950. When he observed three wounded Marines during the attack by his company, Private First Class Polletta courageously moved through intense enemy fire, rendered first aid treatment to each of the casualties, and carried them individually to a position of cover, thereby facilitating their prompt evacuation. His fortitude, daring initiative and unselfish concern for the safety of others at the risk of his own life reflect great credit upon Private First Class Polletta and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
