The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Harry J. Polete, Jr. (MCSN: 305984), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a squad leader of Company L, Twenty-second Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade in action against enemy Japanese forces on Eniwetok Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands on 19 February 1944. Directing his quad to cover his approach with neutralizing fire, Corporal Polete moved forward and destroyed an enemy machine gun and mortar positions with hand grenades thereby enabling his unit to advance. His courage, initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
