The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant George S. Plantier (MCSN: 0-9059), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands on 9 October, 1942. While serving as platoon leader of the weapons platoon, Company B, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division engaged in battle with hostile forces south of Point Cruz and west of the Matanikau River, Second Lieutenant Plantier in order to gain utmost effectiveness from the fire of his mortar section, occupied a dangerously exposed observation station. Although wounded while in this position he carried on with utter disregard for his own personal safety until Japanese fire was silenced. His heroic devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
