The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Lucindo Pimentel (MCSN: 344643), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an ambulance driver of Company C, First Medical Battalion, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands from 15 September to 1 October 1944. In the face of constant hostile fire during this period, Corporal Pimentel courageously made several trips to assist in the removal of his wounded comrades to a place of safety where medical treatment could be administered. On 19 September when his ambulance was struck by hostile fire and his carbine, which was slung over his shoulder was cut in two by an enemy sniper’s bullet, he aided materially in lifting the spirits of his comrades by his constant joking on the poor marksmanship of the Japanese. While at the front lines on 21 September, Corporal Pimentel volunteered on several occasions to crawl over rugged terrain which was swept by heavy enemy machine gun and sniper fire to reach casualties and personally carried thirteen severely wounded comrades to safety. His bravery, initiative and unwavering devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
