The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Leonard Perry (MCSN: 487835), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a member of a patrol of Company E, Second Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands on 7 July 1944. When one of his companions was killed and another wounded by a sudden burst of enemy fire, Private First Class Perry unhesitatingly moved to the aid of the wounded man and dragged him out of the line of fire of the enemy weapon which was less than thirty yards away. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Perry and the United States Naval Service.
