The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Marion L. Peregrine (MCSN: 356420), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while a member of the Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Tenaru Sector, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands on 13 to 17 September 1942. Expertly operating his Browning automatic rifle, Private Peregrine rendered valuable service in his effective and skillful protection of a light machine gun. On one occasion his simulation of fire of the light machine gun which was temporarily out of action saved his position from being rushed and possibly captured. Constantly on guard against danger, he quickly shifted his fire and succeeded in killing a Japanese soldier who had gained a position to his rear. Private Peregrine’s courageous and loyal devotion to duty was instrumental in preventing the enemy from penetrating the lines in his vicinity.
