The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Wayne B. Pee (MCSN: 831506), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a squad leader of Company G, Third Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 14 March 1945. During an enemy night attack, Private First Class Pee saw a member of his squad receive a direct hit which ignited a white phosphorous grenade tied to his pack strap. Despite the heavy concentration of hostile fire cause by the sudden illumination of burning brush in the area, he crawled to the painfully burned man and, although burned severely himself while rolling the man in the and to extinguish the blazing clothing, succeeded in dragging his wounded comrade to safety. His courage, initiative and daring devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
