The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Gotfried Paulson, Jr. (MCSN: 1101516), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Ammunition Carrier in Company C, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 23 and 24 April 1951. When his platoon was subjected to a series of attacks during the hours of darkness, Private First Class Paulson repeatedly exposed himself to intense hostile fire to move up and down the line, resupplying the men with ammunition and hand grenades. On the following morning, when the platoon again came under heavy enemy fire while beginning to cross an open rice paddy as rear guard for the battalion, he rushed from his covered position to an open area and delivered accurate fire against the enemy position on the right flank, thereby allowing other elements of the platoon to advance and overrun it. Mortally wounded during this action, Private First Class Paulson, by his outstanding courage and initiative, served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
