The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Frank A. Parse (MCSN: 466570), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands on 17 June 1944. When part of his unit’s lines were held up by Japanese machine guns located in caves to the immediate front, Private First Class Parse braved terrific enemy fire to advance with his flame thrower across extremely rugged terrain to a position that gave him observation on three enemy machine gun emplacements two of which he quickly destroyed. Mortally wounded by machine gun fire as he moved into the enemy’s left flank stronghold, Private First Class Parse, by his aggressive fighting spirit and daring courage contributed materially to the elimination of the Japanese held position and to the ultimate success of our vital mission in the island. L His unfaltering devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
