The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Billy S. Parks (MCSN: 312348), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Second Marines reinforced in action against enemy forces during the invasion of Japanese controlled territory in the Solomon Islands area from 7 to 9 August 1942. Undaunted by withering blasts of hostile weapons, Corporal Parks fought with skill and daring against the well-entrenched foe during the hazardous initial landing on Tanambogo, continuing his aggressive action until he and his comrades were ordered to withdraw and proceed to Gavutu. While attempting to effect a precarious landing in the face of tremendous opposition by the enemy ashore, Corporal Parks maintained his courage and determination throughout the long periods in the water under intense fire before he and the other marines finally succeeded in gaining the beach. His valiant devotion to duty throughout this hazardous period was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
