The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Charles E. Pareigis (MCSN: 835336), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces at Saipan, Mariana Islands on 5 July 1944. When the enemy launched a vicious attack against our lines in the early morning, forced adjoining flanks to withdraw a short distance and established a machine gun in the evacuated area, Private First Class Pareigis was dispatched with his squad to wipe out the emplacement but was driven back by the enemy’s withering fire in the first attempt. Aware of the extreme danger and on his initiative he courageously pressed forward across the exposed area in a valiant effort to neutralize the strong pint but was fatally struck down while completing his perilous task. L By his daring initiative, unwavering perseverance and outstanding fortitude at great risk of his life, Private First Class Pareigis served as an inspiring example to his comrades, and his unwavering devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
