The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Robert C. Pace (MCSN: 299253), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a chief of a howitzer section of Battery H, Third Battalion, Tenth Marines, Second Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands on 7 July 1944. When the enemy launched a devastating counter attack, Sergeant Pace braved the deadly machine gun fire emanating from a hostile tank to direct the efforts of his section in repulsing the bitter onslaught. Fiercely aggressive despite serious wounds sustained in the furious action, he steadfastly remained in his position and continued to lead his men in delivering point blank fire against the vehicle until he was overcome by weakness and exhaustion. Although he later succumbed to his wounds, Sergeant Pace by his inspiring leadership, outstanding fortitude and dauntless perseverance in the face of tremendous odds had contributed to the destruction of an enemy tank and to the saving of many lives. His zealous devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
