The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Walter F. Osborne, Jr. (MCSN: 815495), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Acting Sergeant of an Artillery Forward Observer Party of Battery G, Third Battalion, Fourteenth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 1 March 1945. Voluntarily advancing beyond the front line to occupy a hill which provided good observation of the enemy, Corporal Osborne directed continuous and accurate rifle fire against the Japanese entrenched on the infantry objective, thereby materially assisting several squads in occupying the hostile position. During this action he was wounded and evacuated for medical treatment. His initiative, cool courage and unselfish devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
