The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Thomas R. O’Neill (MCSN: 265159), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company L, Third Battalion, Twenty-second Marines (Reinforced), Fifth Amphibious Corps, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the invasion of Eniwetok and Parry Islands, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands Group, on 19, 20 and 22 February 1944. Although wounded during fierce fighting and evacuated to and aid station, Sergeant O’Neill accepted only temporary first aid and returned to his unit. In the engagement on Parry Island when all other non-commissioned officers were casualties, he assumed and efficiently performed the duties of Platoon Sergeant. By his courage and initiative, Sergeant O’Neill contributed materially to our success in these areas and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
