The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Martin L. Oliver (MCSN: 324905), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company K, Third Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Mariana Islands, 31 July 1944. When his platoon leader was killed and several men wounded in front of our lines, Sergeant Oliver exposed himself to heavy hostile sniper and machine-gun fire in order to bring the wounded men to safety. When it seemed impossible to remove the remaining two men because of the intense enemy fire, he worked his way out and succeeded in bringing the men to our lines. His skill, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
