The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Frank W. Oldroyd (MCSN: 803268), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Squad Leader serving with the Second Battalion, Twentieth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during the invasion of enemy Japanese-held Saipan, Mariana Islands, in June 1944. Mortally wounded as he led his men to the beach under the continuous pounding of terrific Japanese mortar fire, Corporal Oldroyd directed his men to more advantageous positions and tenaciously continued to perform his duties with courageous determination in the face of the enemy’s fanatic opposition until he succumbed to his wounds. Corporal Oldroyd’s indomitable fighting spirit, resolute fortitude and unwavering devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
