The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Edward M. O’Herron, Jr. (MCSN: 0-12628), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to Headquarters Battalion, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 26 February to 23 March 1945. After serving efficiently as Battalion Supply Officer until 4 March, Captain O’Herron replaced a company commander who had become a casualty. When his Battalion moved forward in the assault on 12 March, he remained in the front lines under heavy small-arms, mortar and grenade fire and, constantly exposing himself to enemy fire, personally led his men in the attack, thereby contributing to the reduction of a salient which had been holding the advance. His leadership, courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Captain O’Herron and the United States Naval Service.
