The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Warren T. O’Hara, Jr. (MCSN: 376451), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Member of a Machine Gun Squad serving with the THIRD Marine Division during the landing attack at Cape Torokina, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on November 1, 1943. When his squad’s concerted fire directed at the entrance to a Japanese bunker proved ineffective, Private First Class O’Hara unhesitatingly charged directly at the bunker and mounted its roof. While subjected to fire from nearby enemy rifle pits, he boldly used his bayonet to cut a hole in the roof and, quickly dropping a hand grenade through the opening, enabled his comrades to enter and capture the hostile emplacement from its stunned occupants. The splendid initiative and great personal valor displayed by Private First Class O’Hara on this occasion were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
