The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Warren J. O’Brien (MCSN: 506839), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Intelligence Scout of the Second Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 15 June 1944. Volunteering to guide a platoon of medium tanks into the front lines, Private First Class O’Brien courageously exposed himself to enemy fire by riding on the outside of one of the tanks in order to have unobstructed vision and, directing fire on an enemy stronghold impeding the advance of the company, contributed materially to the destruction of the hostile position. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class O’Brien and the Unites States Naval Service.
