The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Royal E. North (MCSN: 0-8454), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Plans and training Officer of the Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Marianna Islands, 2 August 1944. Despite heavy fire from enemy machine guns and hand grenades, and when attacked from the rear by approximately one hundred and fifty of the enemy, Captain North organized and deployed the personnel of his Command Post as an assault unit. When Marine tanks cane to the aid of the beleaguered post, he braved intense hostile machine-gun fire to make personal contact with the tanks and direct their fire. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Captain North and the United States Naval Service.
