The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Robert Jelio Nicora, Jr. (MCSN: 1136818), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of a Machine Gun Section of Company F, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 17 August 1952. Although painfully wounded when the enemy ambushed his unit while the men were en route to a combat outpost in advance of the main line of resistance, Sergeant Nicora bravely attempted to position his machine gun in the face of withering hostile fire in an effort to protect his comrades. Mortally wounded by another burst of enemy fire while he was moving forward, Sergeant Nicora, by his outstanding courage, exceptional fortitude and aggressive fighting spirit, served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
