The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Platoon Sergeant Jerry Nichols (MCSN: 274717), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader serving with the Third Battalion, Eighth marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 24 June 1944. Courageous and aggressive in the face of terrific fire from Japanese guns, Platoon Sergeant Nichols rendered valiant service during the initial operations on this strategically important enemy stronghold. When two skillfully sighted enemy machine guns blocked the advance of our forces, he volunteered for a patrol to destroy the guns and during the first attempt was seriously wounded by hostile rifle fire. Refusing evacuation after receiving first aid, Platoon Sergeant Nichols led another patrol and succeeded in completing the extremely hazardous mission, thereby contributing materially to the ultimate success of this vital campaign. His determined initiative and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
