The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Kenneth D. Newton (MCSN: 469062), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Battery M. Fourth Battalion, Eleventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 28 April 1945. In the face of heavy sniper and machine-gun fire, Private First Class Newton went to the aid of three wounded men who were on the forward slope of a fiercely contested ridge. Aided by another Marine, he carried two of the wounded men to cover on the reverse side of the slope and, returning in full view of a considerable number of hostile forces on an adjoining ridge, carried the third casualty nearly two hundred yards to safety. By his initiative and cool courage, he assisted in saving the lives of the three men, and his unselfish devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
