The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Waldemar A. Neudeck (MCSN: 430887), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of a Fire Group in a Rifle Platoon of Company G, Third Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces, on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 20 February 1945. When Corporal Neudeck’s company was temporarily prevented from moving forward across and airfield due to extremely heavy enemy artillery and mortar fire, two wounded Marines were left in front of the lines of one of the assault platoons. Voluntarily leaving the safety of his shell hole, Corporal Neudeck braved the enemy fire and succeeded in carrying each man to a place of safety, thereby undoubtedly saving his comrades’ lives. His initiative, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
