The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class William Nelson (MCSN: 498489), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 15 September 1944. Despite the isolation of his position which prevented the delivery of additional ammunition for his machine gun, Private First Class Nelson maintained his station steadfastly in the face of repeated enemy attacks. When the ammunition for his machine gun was expended, he used grenades and his pistol to repulse the enemy until help could arrive. Private First Class Nelson prevented a serious enemy penetration of our lines, and his personal valor in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
