Thomas Barnes enlisted in the Air Force in 1949, serving in support roles in Japan during the Korean War, and in-theater during the Vietnam War. In 1973 he became the first Black Airman to be selected Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force, serving as the 4th man in that top enlisted role. He was extended for an additional year TWICE by the Chief of Staff, retiring in 1977 after his unprecedented 4-year term.
