The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Roy C. Negus (MCSN: 859776), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company F, Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 9 March 1945. When the commissioned and non-commissioned officers of this platoon had become casualties, Private First Class Negus assumed command of his unit. Although the nature of the terrain made it necessary to contact each man individually and the platoon’s lines were under extremely heavy mortar, machine gun and rifle fire, he went to each man, explained his plan of action and arranged for the continuation of the attack. Leading his platoon in the attack over terrain which offered no cover or concealment, Private First class Negus spurred his men to secure the assigned objective. By his bold initiative and exemplary leadership, he contributed materially to the successful completion of his company’s mission, and his courageous devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
