The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Mack C. Neff (MCSN: 320921), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached as a Bazooka Man serving with the Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu Island, Palau Group, on 19 September 1944. Advancing with his company over strongly fortified, hazardous terrain in the face of intense enemy fire, Corporal Neff courageously exposed himself to further peril in proceeding forward of his grenade fire into expertly concealed Japanese pillboxes and machine-gun emplacements. By his heroic determination, he contributed materially to the destruction of many hostile positions before he was mortally wounded. Corporal Neff’s indomitable fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
