The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John S. Nedoroscik (MCSN: 348740), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of a Machine Gun Section in Company H, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the island of New Britain, Bismarck Archipelago, on 30 December 1943. When his positions were overrun during a fierce hostile assault on his company’s defensive installations, Sergeant Nedoroscik bold lead his men back into the gun pits and, engaging the enemy in furious hand-to hand combat, succeeded in regaining the positions. Putting one of the guns back into action and manning it himself, he fired on the enemy with determined aggressiveness, contributing directly to the stabilization of friendly lines and to the ultimate repulse of the hostile attack. His outstanding courage, competent leadership and valiant fighting spirit in the face of heavy odds reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Nedoroscik and the United States Naval Service.
