    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Herbert C. Nappier, Jr. (MCSN: 306449), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Wire Team Leader of the First Signal Company, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on the night of 23 – 24 October 1942. Cool, courageous and efficient in the performance of his essential duties throughout the furious night battle, Sergeant Nappier advanced fearlessly through sniper-infested jungle to repair vital tactical wire circuits despite intense artillery and mortar fire. He repeatedly led his wire team into heavy besieged area and, by his initiative, determination and gallant leadership in the face of terrific odds, served as an inspiring example to his men, thereby contributing to the success of this critical battle. His devotion to duty under Japanese fire reflects the highest credit upon Sergeant Nappier and the United States Naval Service.
